Acupressure is just one of a number of Asian bodywork therapies (ABT) with roots in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Acupressure is a specific type of massage that relies primarily on using the thumbs, fingers and palms to apply pressure to various points on the body. Therapists may use various rhythms, pressures and techniques in the practice. Shiatsu massage is one form of acupressure therapy. Acupressure massage is not Acupuncture. Acupressure massage triggers the same key points in the body but is much more gentle. Instead of puncturing the points with pins and needles which can be painful and scary to many people the massage therapist applies firm pressure with only the hands; This is why it is called acupressure. Acupressure massage makes use of the bodies meridian lines, therapist use their knowledge of this specific framework to help heal the client and address specific issues. There are may benefits of receiving an acupressure massage such as relieving stress, tension and anxiety, alleviating chronic pain and minimizing headaches just to name a few. Acupressure therapy stimulates the body’s circulatory, lymphatic and hormonal systems. It also helps the function of the immune system and the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
