Benefits of Massage on Whiplash
By: Generosa Dingal LMT

Whiplash injuries can occur anytime your head jerks backward or forward, the impact can strain your sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles. Mostly associated with car accidents whiplash is a result of a sudden stretch or tear to the muscles of the SCM muscles. Some of the symptoms of whiplash include soreness and tightness of the neck, headache and pain when moving your head. Incorporating massage and stretching to treat whiplash will help in the healing process and help prevent further injury. Here are some of the ways massage to treat whiplash and hyperextension of the neck.

Massage will allow for an increase in oxygen to the affected area. This will relax the muscles causing increased circulation and reducing inflammation. Massage will help break up adhesion and scar tissue near and around the SCM muscles resulting in increased mobility and better range of motion. Massage will also reduce pain, with the sudden injury to the muscles in the neck this can be very painful and if not treated early on can cause pain for months or even years after the injury. Massage will help align and balance this area so that the pain will subside.
