Lymphatic Massage Treatment
After surgery, the surgeons may prescribe a lymphatic massage to some patients. A lymphatic massage is the best way to ease swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgeries such as Liposuction or Abdominoplasty. While this detoxification process can boost immunity for faster healing.
What is lymphatic massage?
Some patients experience post-surgery accumulation of liquid or tissues beneath the skin that can harden. This can result of bruising or soreness. Lymphatic massage is a type of gentle massage that encourages blood flow and lymph drainage to help relieve the pain. Once the lymph is drained, the re-absorption process begins. The waste tissue will be discarded to where it needs to go. Lymphatic massage is a very safe and effective way to speed up the healing process and improve post-surgery. The lymphatic system flushes fluid through the body to help in the detoxifying process.
Post Surgery- your lymphatic system may be damaged or backed up. A certified lymphatic massage therapist can help facilitate the movement of fluid, which will relieve pressure. This allows the lymphatic system to be at the height of effectiveness for most patients. This massage also can help reduce stress and anxiety, break up scar tissue and adhesion. These types of massages have many other benefits too, including detoxification, pain alleviation, and relaxation. Your immune system will also benefit from these massages, which is crucial during a post-operative time of healing.
Why is it so important to have this specific type of massage after surgery?
The massage has to be a lymphatic massage to help with the break up old scars. Other massages (particularly deep tissue massages) could actually hurt you as you’re trying to heal, so it is crucial to choose a massage therapist who has the correct certifications and credentials for lymphatic massage. Some people do their own lymphatic massages for post-surgery, but this can be very labor intensive. We do lymphatic massages in-house, so no legwork is needed on your part. Your only job is to rest and heal. Consider it a custom treatment, as our certified lymphatic massage therapist will target your specific needs to aid in your recovery. The touch is gentle and slow movement usually last about one hour. Your surgeon will advise on how many lymphatic massages will be right for your recovery.
What should I Do After My Lymphatic Massage?
After your lymphatic massage, it is important to drink plenty of water and get up and move around. Most patients feel very relaxed after their massages and might be tempted to lie down, but a bit of movement will increase blood flow and speed up the healing process. You’ll need to follow up with your doctor’s specific recommendations for exercise and activity. If you have any further questions about the lymphatic massage? Please don’t hesitate to ask.
