What Is Massage?

Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical, functional, and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. Massage involves acting on and manipulating the client’s body with pressure (structured, unstructured, stationary, and/or moving), tension, motion, or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids. Targeted tissues may include muscles, ligaments, skin, tendons, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as the lymphatic vessel, and / or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with fingers, hands, forearms, elbows, and / or feet. There are over eighty different massage modalities.

Professional massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor. The client may be fully or partly unclothed. Privacy is maintained by covering parts of the body with towels or sheets.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy increases blood supply, oxygen, and nutrition to the muscle tissue, joints, and vital organs, improving circulation throughout the body. Massage therapy helps muscles to recover more quickly from exertion and fatigue. It aids in the relief of muscle spasms and cramping and helps in the prevention of muscular atrophy. Massage therapy promotes a greater range of motion in joints and keeps ligaments and tendons supple.

Also, therapeutic massage typically enhances relaxation and reduces stress which can make some diseases and conditions worse. The sympathetic nervous system helps mobilize the body for action. When a person is under stress, it produces the fight-or-flight response, during which the heart rate and breathing rate will go up, for example. Blood vessels narrow, then the muscles tighten.

The parasympathetic nervous system creates what some call the “rest and digest” response, during which the heart rate and breathing rate slow down, for example. Blood vessels dilate, and healing activity increases in many parts of the body. It helps stimulate the release of certain chemicals in the body as well, such as serotonin or endorphins.

Massage therapy plays an important role in our health and well-being. For many years, massage therapy has been shown to ease many medical conditions. We utilize massage therapy to help heal the body and prevent stress-related conditions that come with everyday life.
